Descriptif

A spiritual artwork by Dora Maar, famous and valued surrealist french photograph, who inspired Picasso but was much more than a muse whose strong beliefs against fascism spearheaded Guernica’s masterwork.

Getting an insatiable creativity, she worked the most important part of her life upon experimental art and abstract painting when she lived in Ménerbes, a small village in Luberon where lived too the painter Nicolas de Staël, her friend.

Our artwork comes from the sale of Dora Maar’s estate in 1998 and wears the stamp on the recto and the Dora Maar’s monogram on the reverse.

This is a pure abstractive painting, near Gérard Schneider’s Abstraction Lyrique movement but with a higher sense of blueprint. Only one earthy color with relief to focusing herself upon the calligraphy, the circular soaring movement to the sky, like a spiritual momentum.
Or when art tells a story about faith with a superb sober, true and intimate beauty.

Dora Maar was exhibited in 2019 at Centre Pompidou, Paris, for an important retrospective of her work (500 artworks and documents) with the partnership of Tate Modern and Getty Museum.
