VERY GOOD CONDITION - EXTREMELY RARE and required english medallion edition
Descriptif
In 1952, the belgian historical of all original editions of Tintin, Casterman, decided to release Tintin comic strips in foreign lenguages.
Wanting to publish by itself the adventures of Tintin in english lenguage, Casterman began to print : The Secret of the Unicorn and The Red Rackham’s Treasure.
But only two titles were published by Casterman.These two english first editions are extremely scarce and required.
No more than 2000 books will have been printed (a short print for a Tintin).
That’s only in 1958 that the londonian publisher Methuen allowed to print in UK the adventures of Tintin ; and in 1959 that were published by Methuen the two first english lenguage titles already a first time published by Casterman.
We can notice this edition starts again the liked « medallion » front cover used by Casterman for the french edition B6/B7 ; the difference being in the mention inside the blue medallion which only exists in these first english edition. It is written : « the dauntless reporter. » The same mention appears in the title page and back cover.
The translator for these editions is not given.
Unlike the most of UK edition then published by Methuen, board are not bright but matt finish.
Other curiosity proving that Casterman wanted to publish more than two titles. We can see that ten titles are announced on the back cover. However only the two first titles will be printed.
Titles which names will be changed by Methuen. By instance : The mysterious Star will be known on the name : The Shooting star. An incredible testimony that maybe Casterman met problems with english translation and so preferred to give the licence to the british publisher Methuen since 1958.
Very good condition, some defects, the most important visible on the pictures :
- Front cover in very pretty condition, some little rubbings, very few soiled
- Back cover : good looking : just rubbed to the margins and edges
- Corners : bottom corner almost pricking, top corners rubbed
- End papers : binding is perfect, just a tiny tear on the last.
- Spine : yellow « pellior » spine very pretty. Superb intense colour, tight, very good condition, some normal rubbings to the edges. Perfect binding.
- Interior in fresh nice condition with defects : two important tears pages 45 and 59 (see the photographs), others are in the margins and small or tiny : p. 26, 31, 33, 41, 49, 51, 53. Defects possible to restore. A print error p. 29 (original error of print, a pink-red colour overflows a little). It remains a nice book.
This title inspired the end of Spielberg's film, here in the so scarce medallion english edition, the first english edition published by Casterman in 1952.

HERGÉ
The famous belgian comics writer and artist Georges Prosper Rémi (22 may 1907 - 3 March 1983) better known by the pen name Hergé.
Hergé wrote the 24 volumes of The Adventures of Tintin between 1929-1
« Je cherche à raconter avant tout une histoire... Et à la raconter clairement. »
Hergé ou l'évidence de la ligne : « Après avoir écrit un synopsis de 2 ou 3 pages, j'effectue mon découpage sur de petites feuilles où je griffonne des croquis... Cela fait, je passe au travail proprement dit sur planches grand format et, là, j'y vais de toutes mes forces... Je crayonne, et je rature, et je gomme, et je recommence jusqu'à ce que je sois satisfait. (...) Puis, case par case, je vais prendre un calque de tous ces crayonnés. Cela signifie que, parmi tous ces trais que s'entremêlent, se surposent, se dédoublent, s'entrecroisent, se recoupent, je vais choisir celui qui me paraît le meilleur, celui qui me semble à la fois le plus souple et le plus expressif, le plus clair et aussi le plus simple, celui qui exprime au maximum le mouvement, et cela tout en essayant de conserver toute la spontanéité, la fraîcheur, le jaillissement du premier jet, même si le premier jet a exigé un long travail. »
DATES ET MOMENTS CLÉS
Le 22 mai 1907, naissance de Georges Remi ou Hergé à Bruxelles.
Le 10 janvier 1929, Tintin et Milou font leur première apparition.
En 1930, premier album : Tintin chez les Soviets.
En 1946, publication du premier numéro du Journal Tintin.
En 1950, Hergé fonde les Studios Hergé.
En 1976, parution de la dernière aventure de Tintin : Tintin et les Picaros.
Le 3 mars 1983, Hergé meurt à l'âge de 76 ans.
Les albums de Tintin restent des best-sellers dans le monde entier : depuis 1929, les ventes ont dépassés les 250 millions d’albums vendus, traduits en plus de soixante langues.
Dans les ventes publiques internationales d’œuvres d’art, les amateurs s’arrachent à prix d’or les albums, les dessins d’Hergé et les objets de tintinophilie.
Depuis une dizaine d’année les ventes aux enchères de Bandes Dessinées ont décollées au point de devenir un marché indépendant de celui du livre avec ses experts et ses catalogues de vente spécialisés.
Les musées eux même commencent à s’intéresser à cet art, depuis 2008 le Centre Georges Pompidou expose une planche d’Hergé tirée de l’album « L’Affaire Tournesol ».
Les célèbres héros de bande dessinée, Tintin et Milou, créés par Hergé, sont devenus les nouvelles coqueluches des collectionneurs de 9eme art.
Succédant à Enki Bilal, Hergé devient l’auteur de BD le plus cher du monde.
Investir dans un album de « Tintin » est indubitablement un excellent placement (sa cote progressant très régulièrement).
